Katherine Megaw RD(SA)

I am a Clinical dietitian based in Cape Town. I did my undergraduate studies in Pietermaritzburg and my post grad studies at natal university and specialized in Paediatrics. I have been working with the Ketogenic diet for the past 9 years and more recently with the modified Atkins diet.

I remember my first patient 9 years ago, little Lizzie, wow what a difference it made to her life and the life of her family. I am and forever will be their biggest fan along with all my other special patients and their families. The true hero’s of the ketogenic diet journey are most definitely the children and their families.

My approach to the diet is to be available to the family to support and encourage them while I walk alongside them with the implementation and long term management of the diet. I follow a similar protocol to Dr Tushka du Toit, monitoring blood glucose and ketone levels. I have also started using carnitine supplementation with some good results. I met and became firm friends with Dr Tuschka du Toit, realizing our similar passions albeit coming from different backgrounds. It has been an invaluable relationship ensuring our patients continue to get the best care from Johannesburg to Cape town and all the spaces in between.

I have a wonderful husband and three beautiful children and one little angel who passed away when she was just 7 months old. Her gift she left me was empathy and understanding for my patients and the trials they have to endure.

What Emma and others have done (and continue to do) for the ketogenic diet worldwide and now in South Africa is fantastic and I feel honoured to be a part of it.
